Battery Power From A Bandage?

Anja Reschke

Imagine if you could use your own energy to power your fitness tracker and other mobile devices. Believe it or not, that type of digital innovation is already underway.

The pace of innovation is accelerating in mind-blowing ways, thanks to the potential unlocked by digital technologies. The healthcare industry is no exception.

According to the SAP eBook, Connected Care: The Digital Pulse of Global Healthcare, the Internet of Things (IoT) is driving a revolution in connected healthcare, from enabling a new preventive approach to personalized care to supporting the development of precision medicine and innovative new products and services.

While traditional healthcare organizations have been transforming to some degree, many innovative ideas come from unexpected places. Non-traditional players such as Uber and Google have been stepping onto the healthcare field with entirely new approaches to medical challenges.

  • Uber is offering a mobile flu shot service, with nurses who come to your door.
  • Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is also developing smart lenses that read glucose levels in tears so patients can avoid blood monitoring.

And it doesn’t stop there. The innovative technology related to healthcare is expanding in many directions. Multiple medical apps are available to monitor remote patients and various chronic conditions, and wearable fitness trackers are such a big trend that they are leading to even more innovative products.

To power all of these fitness and medical devices, a team of international researchers has even developed a solar-powered self-charging battery that can stretch over skin to power wearables that can be used like a bandage! And a team of Chinese scientists has developed an inexpensive transparent smart skin that powers itself by harvesting mechanical energy from movement. Now that’s the power of innovation at its finest.

IoT sensors have endless possibilities in multiple industries, from health monitoring to event ticketing, industrial applications, and even fitness sensors embedded into athletic clothing. I’m eager to see where IoT technology takes us next.
