New Film Challenges What It Means To Be Intelligent

As we approach the 30-year celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we recognize that in both higher education and the workforce, people with intellectual disabilities have seen few others like themselves and have had limited options for learning and employment.

To raise awareness, SAP has sponsored a beautifully human documentary called Intelligent Lives. The film challenges what it means to be intelligent and points to a future where people with all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment, and intimate relationships.

As part of our purpose to help the world run better, improve people’s lives, and become the most inclusive software company on the planet, we work to level the playing field for underrepresented populations in the workplace. SAP’s diversity and inclusion strategy includes the full life cycle of an employee’s experience, encompasses all demographics, and is inclusive of neurodiversity.

Through the renowned Autism at Work program, we employ more than 160 colleagues on the spectrum across 13 countries in various technical and operational roles. These roles, which include software engineers, data analysts, product managers, and more, reduce barriers of entry, and allows the business to tap into an underutilized talent source. Inclusion requires humanity, nurturing, acceptance, patience, tolerance, and empathy. The People Sustainability organization at SAP focuses on mental health and well-being, onsite wellness centers, employee assistance services, accessibility, flexible work schedules, and extensive benefits plans.

Narrated by Academy Award and Golden Globe winner and actor Chris Cooper, Intelligent Lives aims to create awareness for the benefits of including people with intellectual disabilities. The film will be broadcast nationally on Public Television’s WORLD Channel and WorldChannel.org on October 22, in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
