BYOD And My Kids’ Backpacks

BYODWho would have ever thought that 23 years after my CD player was confiscated by my English teacher that I would be able to link the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend to my kids’ backpacks? Certainly not me.

But here I am on a Sunday night, helping my kids get ready for another week of school. Homework done? Check. Lunches packed for the week? Finished. Tablets charged and in their backpacks? Ready to go.

Wait! Did I just say tablets? Oh yes, I did. And I don’t mean a notebook tablet. I am talking about the day that is coming soon when one of my children, from age 9 on down, will  start bringing their own mobile device of choice to class.

Education is joining the BYOD revolution

The BYOD movement is a common trend in business today. And now it is transforming education as we know it. Nowadays, teachers are actually encouraging – or in my case, mandating – school children to bring their own mobile device to school.

Schools are becoming open to the idea of engaging students with mobile technology on their terms. The same devices used to text friends and play video games are getting them excited about learning. But it also challenges the school’s IT organization to manage and secure mobile devices while cultivating an innovative and supportive learning environment.

This is going to require an overhaul in how education IT professionals support users – administrators, faculty, and students alike. In the past, IT was a technology gatekeeper, dictating what devices and computers could be used. With the advent of mobile devices and specifically a new BYOD mentality, IT now needs to be more collaborative, working with teachers and students to identify and support the tools they need.
